Durham Hairstylist AcademyThe Hairstylist Apprenticeship program is offered through the Durham Hairstylist Academy in Oshawa.  This program provides you the opportunity to develop the necessary skills and competencies to achieve your Level 1 and Level 2 apprenticeship training.  

As an apprentice you will study and train in our state-of-the-art salon under the guidance of an experienced licensed hairstylist. You will learn the very best in creative colouring, chemical relaxing, permanent waving, long hair design, scalp analysis and the importance of sanitation of industry tools. 

This program includes all the in-school training required to complete the requirements of the Apprenticeship Program as defined by the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development and the Ontario College of Trades.

  • Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program - Regional Level 1
  • Level 1 - Adult Haristylist Apprenticeship Program
  • Level 2 - Adult Hairstylist Apprenticeship Program

Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) - Regional Level 1

The Regional Level 1 program is offered in Semester 2 and is open to students in their graduating year with a minimum of 26 credits. Students are given the opportunity to earn 2 credits in Hairstyling and two credits in co-operative education tied to these courses.  Additionally, students will also earn their Level 1 Hairstyling Apprenticeship training.

To qualify, YOU must:

  • Be in your graduating year with at least 26 credits
  • Have an interest in working within the Service Sector as a Hairstylist
  • Be in good academic standing, including completion of all compulsory
    courses required for an Ontario Secondary School Diploma
  • Be willing to attend The Durham Hairstylist Academy and a Cooperative
    Education placement in Semester 2

Program components include:

  • Pre-employment orientation and integration sessions at the home school
  • A Cooperative Education placement in a Hairstylist salon
  • Two days per week at Durham Hairstylist Academy to continue your
    apprenticeship in school training
  • 16 weeks at a Cooperative Education placement in the hairstyling industry


  • Students in Grade 11 will have an opportunity to interview for apprenticeship placements in their Grade 12 year in early Spring.
  • A Guidance Counsellor or Cooperative Education teacher must help you to complete an application package for the Accelerated Program and submit all required documents by the assigned deadline.
  • This is a competitive program and an offer of admission is subject to suitability and availability. 
  • Limited spots are available.

  • 8:45am- 4:45pm

Adult Apprenticeship Hairstylist - Level 1 & Level 2 

To qualify, YOU must:

  • Be at least 16 years of age, and eligible to work
  • Have obtained an Ontario Secondary School Diploma
  • Be currently employed in the trade, and formally registered as an apprentice with the
    Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development
  • Be registered with the Ontario College of Trades
  • Be in receipt of your Offer of Classroom Training from the Ministry of Advanced
    Education and Skills Development


Level 1     

  • August 2018 - Monday and Tuesday evenings
  • 3:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. 
  • Completion January 2019


Level 2

  • January 2019 - Monday and Thursday evenings
  • 3:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
  • Completion June 2019.



The Durham Hairstylist Academy Apprenticeship Program is funded and supported by the provincial government, through Employment Ontario.  Registered Apprentices pay only 10% of the tuition cost, which is $400.  

Incidental fees of approx. $300 for books and mannequin heads.  Tools are to be provided by the apprentice.

Registration is first come, first serve.  Payment of the registration fee is required to secure your spot.
