DDSB is happy to present The Cypher: Black Male Empowerment Conference to help Black male youth to unlock their true potential

Black male students from grades 8-10 will have the opportunity to network and learn about future academic pathways, employment opportunities and positive transitions at The Cypher: Black Male Empowerment Conference. The conference, set to take place May 24, 2018, and will offer students and staff in attendance a unique learning environment and the chance to meet and network with community leaders.

With a mandate of engaging and empowering Black male students from across Durham Region, we are proud to present The Cypher: Black Male Empowerment Conference, focused on supporting DDSB's Equity and Inclusive Education goals of promoting positive transitions and academic pathways, while eliminating barriers to success.

Event:The Cypher: Black Male Empowerment Conference
Date:May 24, 2018 — 9:00 am – 2:00 pm
Location:Durham College:  Campus Rec and Wellness Centre (CRWC) Oshawa Campus

This conference will provide opportunities for sharing and growth, which will enhance students' understanding of navigating through Grades 8, 9 and 10 and planning for their future.

Our keynote speaker, Ian Brown, uses comedy, interactive demonstrations and storytelling to address sensitive issues of Mental Health and Wellness while tackling the challenges faced by our students today. Students will then have an opportunity to attend a wide range of workshops facilitated by role models they can identify with, followed by a community network session and student-centered activities.

Dwayne Matthews, a life and education strategist, will facilitate a workshop for DDSB teachers focused specifically on learning in the 21st century, the insurgence of technological advancement in schools, and the drivers that precipitate this information revolution in education.

Arrangements can be made in advance or on-site for interviews and/or photo opportunities.
