It is with great sadness that the Board of Trustees announces the death of Townships of Brock and Uxbridge Trustee and dear friend, Elinor Hansen. Trustee Hansen passed away Monday evening.
Hansen was a Durham District School Board Trustee since 2014. Active in her local community, Elinor served on the School Community Council at her daughter's school for four years, three as chair. She was an elder for her church, Rouge Valley Mennonite, and coordinated the Junior Sunday School program.
Michael Barrett, chair of the board, said, "Elinor Hansen was a highly valued and respected member of the Board of Trustees who will be remembered for her focus on students and for her compassion. Elinor will be sorely missed by trustees, students, staff and the Brock and Uxbridge communities she represented so passionately and effectively."
Director of Education Lisa Millar echoed Barrett's sentiments: "It was a pleasure to work with Elinor. She was extremely dedicated to students, schools, and her community."
As a lifelong lover of books, Elinor was a strong supporter of literacy programming for school and home. Her involvement with the DDSB started when her daughter was in Junior Kindergarten and she volunteered on Tuesday mornings, primarily supporting home reading programs. This continued for several years and grew to include volunteering with her local school's Leveled Literacy Intervention program.
The Board expresses its deepest sympathies for Elinor's family and friends.
Elinor is survived by her husband Peter and daughter Lynda.
