The Communications Department is responsible for promoting effective two-way communication with school communities.  The department provides public relations, media relations, special events, social media and much of the advertising for the Durham District School Board.
 
For media, the Communications Department performs an array of functions, from giving a heads up on newsworthy school-based stories, to helping link reporters with appropriate Board spokespeople, to providing the Board’s position on a particular issue, to helping set up opportunities and ensure proper permissions are in place for media to film, photograph or interview students at school events.
 
As well, it’s the department’s role to prepare media releases and a number of informational publications, including the Director’s Annual Report, the Annual Information Calendar and the Fast Facts brochure that is released each year.

Communications Audit Review
As part of the Board’s ongoing effort to provide effective two-way communication designed to engage all stakeholders, the Durham District School Board (DDSB) participated in a system wide communications audit. The audit was conducted in the month of January 2012. The goal of the audit is to provide the Board with an opportunity to assess the effectiveness of its current communications efforts. Ultimately, the goal of an audit is to ensure effective communication throughout the DDSB.

 
The results of the audit were submitted to the DDSB on May 7, 2012. The report includes information gleaned from the surveys, focus groups, interviews and publication review.
