Commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusiveness
The Durham District School Board (DDSB) is embarking upon new initiatives to continue to support equity, diversity and inclusive practices.

Director of Education Lisa Millar appears in a video outlining key components of the DDSB's commitment in the areas of equity, diversity and inclusiveness. Key highlights include:

  • Establish a Board steering committee with representatives from all stakeholder groups to guide the work and recommendations from the Community Voice Project (a recent survey that identified opportunities to improve equity and diversity);
  • Create sub-committee action teams to implement the projects and initiatives;
  • Develop a 3-year Equity and Diversity Strategic Plan with specific goals that will be measured and reported back;
  • Revise the Board's hiring practices and policies;
  • Offer a series of projects for black boys and youth such as 100 Strong and Stand Up;
  • Introduce a summer reach ahead program to help support students traditionally taking applied-level courses to move into academic level programs;
  • Establish a Diversity Leadership program for racialized, aspiring leaders;
  • Ensure school and classroom practices reflect multiple social realities and perspectives to identify and eliminate barriers to learning; and
  • Ensure equitable access and practices are reflected in the Board's policies and programs to create an inclusive environment where all students have a sense of belonging.

The DDSB supports Education Minister Mitzie Hunter's announcement of the collection of racialized data to assist and inform school boards to improve outcomes and programs for racialized students.

Director Millar emphasizes that the demographic landscape of Durham Region has changed and is continuing to change: "Our communities, families and the students we serve represent a rich cultural diversity that reflects our community and the Durham District School Board. We need to continually evolve and improve our practices to support, enhance, celebrate and be responsive to the social and cultural realities of the students and families we serve.

"At the Durham District School Board, diversity is our strength; diversity is our future.

Join us on our journey."
